Gaia Passages connects youth to the natural world, builds confidence, voice, and leadership, supporting them through the changes from childhood to their teenage years through nature-based after-school and summer programs for youth ages 6-15. Gaia Passages is seeking passionate and dedicated youth mentors (guides) to join our growing team. Our goal is to create a diverse, highly skilled, and passionate team of guides and mentors to lead our groups.

We are looking for guides who can commit to working the summer 2023 season.

Summer Day Camp Guide Job Description

Guides will support youth in their connection to nature through fun immersive experiential based programs.  Our curriculum is in alignment and in support of  the Gaia Passages – mission and vision.  The ideal guide is fun-loving, has lots of energy and has experience working outside in nature with youth. Guides will provide youth with a safe, positive, fun atmosphere, creating inclusive group dynamics, and encouraging them as they become confident and comfortable in nature. Guides implement the ongoing curriculum in a 100% outdoor environment. Summer Camp activities include: nature games, crafting, hiking, exploring, learning outdoor skills  etc.

  • Have a deep personal connection to, interest in growing knowledge and love of the natural world

  • Have experience and love having fun with youth outside in nature

  • Are committed to supporting and mentoring youth using a collaborative model of growth and leadership

  • Know how to create an inclusive space where all feel welcomed

  • Are able to comfortably lead and facilitate a group of youth on your own

  • Enjoy being a part of a team and experience working with a team

  • Are reliable and follow through with your commitments

  • Have Cross-Cultural skills in relating with adults and children of diverse heritages and class backgrounds

Job Requirements

  • Have current CPR+first aid certification and TB test before your first day of work

  • Do livescan/fingerprinting before your first day of work

  • Ability to drive or access independent transport to transport program supplies

  • Ability to stand, walk, jog or have the use of the assistive device to move easefully with ambulatory children and guides

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends

  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds preferred

Professional experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred:

  • Working with youth aged 6-15

  • Working outside in nature with youth

  • Teaching skills of social and emotional intelligence

 

Summer Backpacking Guide Job Description

Backpacking guide will help plan and supervise all aspects of the backpacking camp experience with emphasis on camper comfort and safety, skill development, team-building, and nature connection. Backpacking guides will be mentors and role models for campers and are responsible for planning and managing trip logistics and activities. This is a position with high visibility and Backpacking guide acts as a representative of Gaia Passages in upholding GP mission and vision.  Backpacking guide position requires prior youth backpacking experience. Local or California natural history knowledge is a plus. Activities guides will lead, include earth-based skills- ie; friction by fire, activities, naturalist games, stories and songs.

Job requirements:

In addition to the requirements listed above, all backpacking guides must have proof of a current WFR certification.
